I started my blog, Healthy Dash of Sass, as a creative outlet and form of therapy for myself and to connect with likeminded people but since I am multi passionate it’s really been reborn into a place that you can come as a cozy safe haven.
Let me tell you, the best thing I have ever done is take an idea that everyone said was stupid and run with it.
It’s so funny now that I look back at the path that got me here and I remember how many people had so much to say about me starting a blog. The fact that people would make fun of it should have been the clearest indicator that I was doing something worthwhile, but when you first branch out from “what is normal” and do something different and you haven’t yet made friends or connections with other people also doing that, it’s a very rough place to be mentally. I constantly felt like I was doing something “wrong” or this wasn’t the right step at first. Now I look back to the start of this and realize how much I would have missed out on if I would have stopped because of what other people had to say about it.
This little tiny blog has brought me so many things, so many friendships, allowed me to step into my creative outlet and build a skillset that then put me down the path to open my first small business, Healthy Dash of Social. I look back at the years of growth and can’t even express how thankful I am that I took an idea that everyone said was stupid and ran with it. My point of speaking on this topic is that if you’re reading this and have an idea, what’s holding you back isn’t that you can’t do it, it isn’t that you can’t find the money or resources needed to make it work. It’s that you are afraid of what people will say, especially the ones closest to you. I’m here to remind you that it does not matter what other people have to say, you have to realize that most people are acting in bias, whether they have something they want to do and have not yet done it, or have tried something and let “failure” deter them. Most people who do not branch out are unwilling to be happy for others who do. This is okay, you do not need approval for others to take your idea and run with it.
Think about how you will feel in a year, 2 years, 10 years if you don’t do anything with this idea you can’t stop thinking about. You may think, “I am scared of what people will say,” “I am scared I won’t have support,” “I am scared I will fail,” but I challenge you to look at it differently. So what if nobody supports you? You can support yourself. So what about what other people have to say, why does that matter? You will be the one with the regret if you don’t do it, not them. And the biggest one, so what if you fail? Failure just means you need to re-route, redirect and do things differently.
Do you know how many people said building a blog was dumb? Guess what, if I didn’t build that blog I wouldn’t have met half of the best people in my life. If I wouldn’t have built that blog, I wouldn’t have made the connections that allowed me to start building a skillset that brought me to my first small business, Healthy Dash of Social. If I never started Healthy Dash of Social, I wouldn’t be where I am right now. I wouldn’t have the flexibility to work from home or to take control of my career and grow year by year, which is all extremely important to me. How many people do you think said it was stupid I was starting a boutique marketing agency? A lot. I would hear “how are you going to live?” “How are you going to pay your bills?” “How are you going to make this work if it fails?” Yet, nobody seems to realize that even if it would have failed I still gained a skillset that could benefit me in a variety of roles. I say all this to remind you that it does not matter what anyone has to say. If you want something, if you have an idea, if you can’t stop thinking about something, follow it. You truly have no idea what could come from it (a job opportunity, a new friendship, growth for yourself – so many possibilities.) My final thought to you is to take the “stupid” idea and go after it with everything you’ve got. It’s better to find out what could happen than to be sitting around feeling regret.
